The Stability of Matter: Part I

Speaker: Naveen
Time: 4pm
Naveen shall demonstrate the stability of the Hydrogen atom by showing the ground state of energy is bounded below. This shall be done using variational methods and compared with the exact answer to get a feel for the method. Then, the dependence of energy of an $N$ fermion system shall be computed using similar variational methods. This shall be first step in demonstrating the electrostatic stability of bulk matter. The next part involves the introduction of the Coulomb potential into the above fermion system and checking that it satisfies Dyson's criterion for stability.
